Wally's Futures Report 8/26/26
Tampa Bay Rays to Win the American League (+376)
Recommendation: Buy Now
Drew Rasmussen is giving Tampa Bay exactly the kind of late-season surge a pennant contender wants from the front of its rotation. The right-hander has won seven consecutive starts, producing a 2.20 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 45 strikeouts over 41 innings during that run. His latest outing was another strong one: six innings, three hits and one run in Monday's 4-1 win over Detroit. Behind him, the Rays enter August 26 at 78-54, still leading the AL East by 3.5 games over the Yankees, with Boston five games back.
The rotation has more than Rasmussen. Freddy Peralta, acquired from the Mets at the trade deadline, adds another experienced starter with swing-and-miss ability, while Tampa Bay's lineup continues to feature Junior Caminero, Jonathan Aranda and Yandy Díaz. Caminero had two hits and scored Tampa Bay's only run Tuesday, while Aranda homered and drove in two during Monday's victory. The Rays aren't dependent on one star carrying them; different parts of the roster have supplied production throughout their run to the top of the division.
And the final month gives Tampa Bay direct control over how favorable its October path becomes. The Rays host Boston for three games September 18-20, then play four games at Yankee Stadium September 22-24 before finishing in Philadelphia. Those late head-to-head opportunities could allow Tampa Bay to protect the division lead and strengthen its postseason seeding without needing results elsewhere to break its way.
Bottom Line: Tampa Bay is 78-54 and still controls the AL East, Rasmussen is on one of the best stretches of his season, and the Rays have strengthened the rotation for October. With first place already in hand and crucial divisional matchups still ahead, +376 remains a worthwhile buy.

Milwaukee Brewers to Win the National League (+400)
Recommendation: Buy Now
Milwaukee has reached the point where its season is about more than simply leading the NL Central. Entering August 26 at 81-51, the Brewers own the best record in the National League, sit 5.5 games ahead of the Cubs, and have MLB's No. 1 spot in the latest power rankings. They're also still on pace to challenge for the first 100-win season in franchise history.
What makes Milwaukee particularly appealing is how it continues to win. The Brewers have scored 652 runs while allowing only 492, producing a +160 run differential and an expected record of 83-49. Their offense ranks fifth in MLB in runs despite ranking last in home runs, a fascinating combination that speaks to a lineup capable of generating offense without depending on the long ball. William Contreras, Brice Turang, Jake Bauers and Jackson Chourio have provided production in different ways, giving Milwaukee considerably more offensive variety than its home-run total suggests.
There is also a timely opportunity immediately ahead. After finishing the Mets series, Milwaukee hosts Texas before traveling to Wrigley Field for a series against the second-place Cubs. That head-to-head matchup gives the Brewers a chance to turn an already substantial division advantage into even greater separation as September begins. Two consecutive losses haven't meaningfully changed the larger picture: Milwaukee is 6-4 over its last 10, owns a 5.5-game cushion, and has the underlying performance to support its place atop the National League.
Bottom Line: Milwaukee isn't simply winning more games than the rest of the National League—the Brewers have the run differential, offensive versatility and divisional positioning to back it up. With October positioning firmly in their control, +400 remains a worthwhile buy.

Vancouver Whitecaps to Win MLS Cup (+488)
Recommendation: Buy Now
Vancouver just produced the type of performance that makes its MLS Cup case difficult to ignore. The Whitecaps responded to a 1-0 midweek loss against Houston by dismantling FC Dallas 5-0 on August 22, moving back into first place in the Western Conference. The victory pushed Vancouver to 12-4-4 with 40 points, marking the best 20-game start to an MLS regular season in club history.
The most encouraging development may be the return of Brian White. Coming back from a brief hamstring injury, White immediately scored twice in the first half against Dallas. Ryan Gauld was also back in the starting XI, while Thomas Müller operated alongside him in an attack that overwhelmed Dallas with four first-half goals. Vancouver finished with 17 shots, eight on target and 60.7% possession, while allowing Dallas only one shot on goal. That's the kind of two-way dominance that translates well to knockout soccer.
Now the schedule gives Vancouver an opportunity to turn that performance into another run. The Whitecaps visit Sporting Kansas City on August 29 before returning to BC Place for three consecutive matches against St. Louis City, the LA Galaxy and Austin FC. With first place in the West reclaimed and important attacking pieces contributing together again, Vancouver has an opportunity to build separation and strengthen its postseason positioning over the next several weeks.
Bottom Line: Vancouver is back atop the Western Conference after its most emphatic performance since the World Cup break, White immediately delivered upon returning, and the attack showed how dangerous it can be with its key pieces available together. At +488, we're buying.

Cleveland Guardians to Make the Playoffs (+104)
Recommendation: Buy Now
Cleveland has picked an ideal time to play its best baseball of the season. Entering August 26, the Guardians are 67-66, have won six straight and are 8-2 over their last 10. More importantly, that surge has moved Cleveland into possession of the American League's third Wild Card spot, one game ahead of Texas. The AL Central remains another possible route: Cleveland is 2.5 games behind the first-place White Sox with more than a month still to play.
Tuesday's 8-6 comeback win over the Angels captured the current energy around this club. Cleveland erased an early 5-0 deficit, with José Ramírez producing three doubles and five RBIs and Steven Kwan going 5-for-5. Ramírez delivered the go-ahead two-run double in the 10th before Cade Smith recorded his 35th save. It was Cleveland's sixth consecutive victory and fifth straight on its current road trip—a team that was chasing the playoff field a week ago is now forcing everyone else to chase it.
The schedule adds another reason to like the position. Cleveland's remaining opponents carried the third-lowest combined winning percentage in MLB as of August 24, and the Guardians still have substantial opportunity against teams directly involved in the playoff race. After finishing in Anaheim, they return home for Kansas City and Toronto, with September series still remaining against the Blue Jays, Tigers, Orioles and Twins. Those head-to-head games give Cleveland opportunities to simultaneously add wins and damage competing playoff résumés.
Bottom Line: Cleveland is no longer merely chasing October—the Guardians currently occupy a playoff position, have won six straight, and still have one of baseball's most favorable remaining schedules. With both the Wild Card and AL Central providing realistic paths into the postseason, +104 is worth buying.

Houston Astros to Win the AL West (+194)
Recommendation: Buy Now
The AL West has become a true three-team race, and Houston enters August 26 with the advantage that matters most: first place. The Astros are 66-66, sitting half a game ahead of Texas and 2.5 games ahead of Seattle. Tuesday's 9-7 road win over the Yankees was particularly encouraging after a difficult 2-4 homestand, giving Houston an immediate response against a quality opponent while maintaining control of the division.
The way Houston won Tuesday adds to the appeal. Yainer Díaz homered twice, including the game-tying shot in the eighth, before Yordan Alvarez delivered the go-ahead RBI triple. Jeremy Peña also homered, Houston collected 14 hits, and Josh Hader converted his 19th save in 19 opportunities. The Astros have lacked offensive consistency at times, so getting simultaneous production from several important pieces is a welcome development as the calendar approaches September.
The remaining schedule keeps Houston's path firmly within reach. The Astros' remaining opponents have a combined .506 winning percentage, giving them a slightly more favorable slate than Texas, whose remaining opponents sit at .511. Seattle does have the easiest schedule of the three, which makes Houston's two-game series in Seattle on September 22-23 especially important. Those games give the Astros a direct opportunity to protect their position against one of the teams chasing them immediately before finishing the regular season with four games against the Athletics.
Bottom Line: Houston holds first place in a wide-open AL West, its biggest bats just delivered together in an important road victory, and the Astros will get a late head-to-head opportunity against Seattle. With the division still theirs to defend, +194 remains a worthwhile buy.
