Can Kyler Murray be the Answer for the Vikings?
Those close to the show know that I reside here in Minnesota, which evidently makes me the losing-est blogger in the country. Every year is rooted in failure, disappointment, and a harrowing reminder that the state of Minnesota is cursed when it comes to professional sports.
The Minnesota Twins were the last team to pull it off in the 1991 World Series, and since that time, this state has seen nothing but heartbreak. The Twins haven't sniffed the World Series since, and the Minnesota Wild have been just as brutal.
Although our state has seemed to attract some star power across the major 4 over the years, nothing has yet to come of it in terms of being the best team in the world. I'd say recent history had me believing that the Timberwolves were probably next in line, and I'll continue to pound that drum so long as Anthony Edwards remains the elite superstar that he is.
The Vikings have had their moments, all to be blown by FG kickers (Gary Anderson and Blair Walsh), and that pathetic display of a NFC Championship performance against the would-be champion Eagles.
Just when things started to click for this misfit Vikings group, our front office figured the best idea would be to let Sam Darnold walk during free agency after putting up a historical 14-3 season, along with one of the greatest personal comeback stories of all time. We all know what happened next....
Lots of Minnesota fans dawned hope when the VIkings traded up for JJ McCarthy. I was not one of them and I'm proud of that. His undefeated season and natty with Michigan meant dick to me, as it's clear he was not ready for the big leagues. That hasn't stopped the Vikings media from shoving him down our throats -- until this offseason.
The Vikings finally came to terms with their troubled depth chart at the QB position, and made a move for Kyler Murray. In all honesty, I think we can agree that the job was JJ's to lose. And lose it, he did.
There's something about Kyler that excites me. The VIkings have one of the most talented and deep rosters when it comes to offensive weapons, and frankly, they always have. But make no mistake thinking it will last forever. Kyler Murray right now is the only chance we have at bringing this team to its glory days, and he might just be the answer we needed.
One thing the Vikings did historically well when Kirko Chains was at the helm was make big plays and throw the ball downfield. On the flip side, KC8 was simply not a threat to break out of the pocket. This is where the inevitable collapse of our offensive line torments us each year.
Murray, on the other hand, was made in a factory for this offense. His willingness to escape and launch bombs is the perfect type of presence that will excel this offense to greater heights. And we fucking need it because our division isn't getting any easier.
I will keep this post as a true reminder that even in times of Murray having bad games, that I stand with KM here and now, and he has my full faith to make something happen this season.
